And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up,
and according to his custom on the day of the Sabbath
he entered the synagogue, and he stood up to read.
And a scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him,
and having opened the scroll
he found the place where it was written,
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for which he anointed me
to bring the good message to the poor;
he has sent me to proclaim to the captives release,
and to the blind, sight;
to send the oppressed release;
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
And having rolled the scroll and given it back to the attendant,
he sat down,
and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed upon him.
And he began to say to them,
"Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
And everyone witnessed him
and marveled at the words of grace proceeding out of his mouth,
and they said, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"
And he said to them, "Surely you will quote to me this proverb:
Physician, heal yourself;
what we have heard of happening in Capernaum,
do here in your homeland.
"But in truth I tell you,
many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah,
when the heaven was shut for three years and six months,
when great famine came upon all the earth,
and to none of them was Elijah sent
except to the widow Zarephath of Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet,
and none of them were cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
And everyone in the synagogue hearing these things
was filled with anger,
and standing up they threw him out outside the town,
and led him to the cliff of the mountain
upon which their town was built, in order to throw him down;
but he passing through between them proceeded on.
Jesus said, "No prophet is accepted in his town;
no physician heals those who know him."
And leaving behind Nazareth going he settled in Capernaum
by the sea in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali;
that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah
might be fulfilled saying,
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
way by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations,
the people sitting in darkness saw a great light,
and to those sitting in the country and the shadow of death,
a light has dawned for them.
From that time Jesus began to preach and say,
"Change your minds, for near is the sovereignty of heaven."
