While it was evening on that first day of the week,
the doors having been locked where the disciples were
because of fear of the Jews,
as they were dining and speaking these things
Jesus came and stood in the middle,
and said to them, "Peace to you."
But becoming terrified and frightened
they thought they saw a spirit.
He said to them, "Why are you troubled,
and why are doubts coming up in your hearts?
See my hands and my feet, for I am myself;
touch me and see,
for a spirit does not have flesh and bones
as you see me having."
Saying this he showed them both his hands and his side.
While they were still disbelieving from joy and wondering,
he said to them, "Do you have any food here?"
They handed him part of a broiled fish;
and taking it he ate it in front of them.
Therefore the disciples were glad seeing the Lord.
He reproached their disbelief and hardness of heart
because they had not believed
the ones who had seen him raised.
Then Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you;
as the Father has sent me, I also send you."
Saying this he breathed on them
and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whosever sins you forgive, they are forgiven them;
whosever sins you retain, they have been retained."
But Thomas, one of the twelve called the Twin,
was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord."
But he said to them,
"Unless I see the mark of the nails on his hands
and put my finger into the place of the nails
and put my hand into his side,
I will not believe it."
After eight days his disciples again were inside,
and Thomas with them.
Jesus came, the doors having been locked,
and he stood in the middle and said, "Peace to you."
Then he said to Thomas,
"Bring your finger here and see my hands,
and bring your hand and put it into my side,
and do not be faithless but faithful."
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God."
Jesus said to him,
"Because you have seen me, have you believed?
Blessed are those not seeing yet believing."
So Jesus also did many other signs
in front of the disciples,
which are not written in this book;
but these have been written so that you may believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God,
and so that believing you may have life in his name.
