Then Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit
to be tested by the devil,
and he was with wild beasts.
Having fasted forty days and forty nights,
afterward he was hungry.
The tempter approaching said to him,
"If you are the son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It has been written:
Not on bread alone shall the human live,
but on every saying coming out of the mouth of God."
Then the devil took him along to the holy city of Jerusalem
and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
and said to him, "If you are the son of God,
throw yourself down from here;
for it has been written,
He will command his angels for you to protect you,
and on hands they will lift you up
lest you strike your foot against a stone."
Jesus answered him, "Again it has been written:
You shall not tempt the Lord your God."
Again the devil took him along to a very high mountain
and showed him in a moment of time
all the sovereignties of the world,
and he said to him,
"I will give you all this authority and their glory,
for it has been given over to me
and to whomever I wish to give it;
therefore if falling down you will worship me,
it will all be yours."
Jesus answered him, "Go, Satan;
for it has been written:
You shall worship the Lord your God,
and this only shall you serve."
Having completed every test,
the devil went away from him until an opportune time;
and look, angels approached and ministered to him.
